Shawnee Audubon Society was formed in 1995 as a chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society. .Membership in Shawnee Audubon includes membership in Illinois Audubon Society. There are currently 19 Illinois Audubon Society chapters -- Shawnee Audubon serves the southernmost counties in Illinois.
We focus on issues of environmental significance to Southern Illinois, with special emphasis on those issues that pertain to the conservation and preservation of our native fauna and flora. We are also the stewards of War Bluff Valley Sanctuary -- a 500 acre wildlife sanctuary located in Pope County, as well as Lusk Creek Sanctuary -- a 56 acre sanctuary also in Pope County.
Shawnee Audubon meets 6 times a year for short business meetings and special presentations on topics relating to nature and the environment. We alternate our meetings between Carbondale and War Bluff Valley Sanctuary in Golconda. We also host several field trips throughout the year, participate in the annual Spring and Christmas Bird Counts, provide education programs for clubs/schools/garden centers, and participate in the Southernmost Illinois Birding Festival.
We also hold bird seed sales twice a year. Proceeds from the sale support: educational and public outreach activities, War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation, Cornell Bluebird Trail Project, Plum Island Eagle Sanctuary, and our own annual Insect Awareness & Appreciation Day.
