Dragonflies of Southern Illinois
The life and lore of one of nature’s most intriguing creatures7:00 PM -- Carbondale Township Hall, 217 E. Main Street
Have you ever stopped to consider why the delicate and graceful dragonfly is named after such a fearsome monster? Or have you ever wondered how many different species of dragonfly exist or what the difference is between a dragonfly and damselfly? For answers to these questions and many more about the dragonflies of southern Illinois the public is invited to join Shawnee Audubon Chapter at their next meeting on Monday March 8, 7:00 p.m., to be held at the Carbondale Township Hall, 217 E. Main St., Carbondale. Well-known naturalist and retired biologist with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, John Schwegman, will be the featured speaker.
Schwegman will reveal the diversity of dragonfly species in our region as well as share information on the biology of dragonflies and their “lore.” His stunning photography and enchanting stories are a winning combination of entertainment and education.
Be sure to mark Monday March 8 on your calendar and join Shawnee Audubon Chapter for this interesting meeting. Everyone is welcome. Parking is available across the street from, or directly behind the Carbondale Township Hall.

Trail of Tears State Forest -- exact time & location to be announced.
Spend a lovely spring evening around a campfire at Trail of Tears State Forest listening to the tales and lore of the legendary naturalist and conservationist, John Muir. You won't want to miss this captivating living history performance by our very own John Wallace.

Annual Meeting and special presentation “California Condors: a Story of Hope”
7:00 PM at the Carbondale Township Hall
Pat Brown, former southern Illinois resident and Shawnee Chapter member who has been living at Grand Cayon, Arizona for the past decade will share photos, videos and stories about the incredible California condor. The presentation will be preceeded by our Annual Meeting: a short re-cap of Shawnee Audubon Chapter's activities and election of officers and board.

War Bluff Valley Sanctuary Stewardship Day

Upcoming projects include trail maintenance, barn remodel, metal recycling.
Stewarship Day at War Bluff Valley Sanctuary is the 2nd Saturday of each month. Stewardship Day is a great way to see the Sanctuary, meet new friends, get some exercise, and enjoy the great outdoors. Meet at the Sanctuary around 10 a.m. Bring work gloves and a sack lunch. Water, coffee, soft drinks and snacks are provided.
Occasionally, Stewardship Day is cancelled due to weather or other circumstances -- it's always a good idea to call in advance for information about the upcoming Stewardship Day--contact War Bluff Valley Sanctuary at 618-683-2222 or email site manager.
Directions to War Bluff Valley Sanctuary: Follow Rte 146 north out of Golconda for 3.5 miles to Bushwhack Road (look for brown Wildlife Viewing Area sign); turn left; follow Bushwhack for 2.2 miles to Sanctuary entrance on right; follow driveway past caretaker's house all the way back to Kestrel Hall located in the metal pole barn.

Misc. Information
Shawnee Audubon Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society holds meetings six times a year. We also offer field trips several times a year.
Summer meetings are held at War Bluff Valley Sanctuary, Golconda, IL. Follow Rte 146 north out of Golconda for 3.5 miles to Bushwhack Road (look for brown & white Wildlife View Area sign); turn left; follow Bushwhack for 2.3 miles to Sanctuary entrance on right; follow driveway past caretaker's house all the way back to Kestrel Hall located in the metal pole barn.Winter meetings are held in Carbondale at the Carbondale Township Hall, 217 E. Main Street.
