Pope County Hummingbird Festival

flierSaturday July 25,   9 AM – Noon

Everyone is invited to the Pope County Hummingbird Festival, sponsored by Shawnee Chapter, Illinois Audubon Society. The festival will provide an opportunity to see these fascinating little birds up close and learn more about their amazing lives. The festival will take place at the Lindgren home, 3.3 miles north of Golconda on 9 Wishes Ranch Road, Golconda IL.

Cathie Hutcheson, Master Bander, will be capturing and banding the birds. The hummingbirds will be captured by a unique trapping mechanism, held only long enough to record basic data, then are released. The purpose of banding is to determine how far into Mexico or Central America the birds go for the winter, where they stop during their travels, how long they live, and whether they come back to the same sites year after year.

Audubon Society members will have information available on feeding and gardening for hummingbirds, as well as children’s activities. Shawnee Chapter will also have hummingbird merchandise such as t-shirts, garden signs, plants, feeders and accessories available for purchase. Our host, Kristi Lindgren, will have her own homemade soaps and lotions available for purchase.

Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs, drinking water, hat, and sunscreen. Parking is on the grass just in front of festival area. The festival officially ends at noon, but the Lindgrens invite everyone to stay afterwards to simply sit and enjoy watching the hummingbirds at the feeders.

Please note: The festival will be held rain or shine. There will be no public restrooms available at the site so plan on stopping in Golconda before joining us.

Directions: Follow Route 146 north of Golconda for 2.6 miles, turn west on to Eddyville Rd; in 1/2 mile turn  left (south) on to 9 Wishes Ranch Rd; go 1/2 mile to the end of the road. Lindgren’s is the only house on the lane. Call Karen at 618-534-7870 if you need help finding the location.

Shawnee Chapter is the local chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, and serves as stewards of War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Pope County. Illinois Audubon has been helping preserve Illinois flora and fauna since 1897. The mission of the Society is to promote the perpetuation and appreciation of native plants and animals and the habitats that support them. This event is free and open to the public—everyone is welcome!

Zebra Swallowtail

Zebra Swallowtail at War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

After the Presentation last night by Mike Jeffords and Susan Post I decided to try and capture the first butterfly I saw today. With a camera of course. Fortunately, right out the kitchen door, I found this Zebra Swallowtail which lingered long enough for me to save this image.

A visitor and I shared this rainbow with the emerging wildlife at War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary last Friday. I’ve been pretty busy as I’m sure most everyone is this time of year. So busy I might not have taken time to remember these images had I not captured them with my camera. Sometimes I wish I had recorded those bird songs I tried to chase down from the treetops but with persistence I’ll find a name for those songsters.
